The nursing profession in health structures is counted among the most stressful professions and requires health professionals to mobilize adaptation strategies called coping to deal with it. It is in this context that we analyze the multiple coping measures adopted by doctors, nurses as well as managers of health institutions in the City of Lubumbash. A total of 158 public and private health institutions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, July 2015 to July 2016. The main objective is to determine the strategies adopted by health professionals to cope with the stresses experienced. To achieve this, a qualitative phenomenological study aimed at deepening the resources involved in stress management was selected, thus, 41 Interviews were encoded, processed and analyzed using NVivo 11 Pro for Windows software in the form of a file, called “source”. Based on the data collected, three coping modes were identified, in particular: problem-focused coping, “When I am stressed, I concentrate on doing the work whatever the case. I dig, I question in order to know how to go about it. In fact I keep my mind on the case, what I am doing and what I must do” coping focused on emotion “But I managed to pull myself together through prayers, at home or in church. And sometimes I read the Bible in the hospital to comfort myself” and coping focused on the problem and on the emotion “(…) I always try to overcome it. The way I behave in front of the patient is to surpass myself and I do everything so that the patient does not notice that I am stressed (…).” Being used to experiencing stressful situations in the exercise of their profession, our respondents first resort to coping strategies based on the problem, when these fail, they will then put in place other strategies that relate to emotion-focused coping or combine the two to overcome stress once faced with a stressful situation.
